Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava    Kamusta    Malo el lelei    Mauri    Hello Everyone

Welcome to Term 3 Week 5. We are already halfway through our third term.

The children have been preparing for our school-assisted Parish Mass this Sunday at 10 am.  I do hope we see our school families attending. Mass is an important part of our Catholic life and these are the rituals you wanted for your children when you chose to send them to a Catholic school.

Thank you to the parents that were able to support our recent sporting events. Today we had children participating in North Group Cross Country. I’m sure they did their best and we are always proud of their efforts in sports and learning.

Tomorrow I will be taking a group of Year 7 students through to Holy Cross School, Papatoetoe, to join with other young people from our Community of Learners/Kaahui Ako schools to be part of a student leadership programme. In previous years, this has been greatly enjoyed by our participants who will have the opportunity to meet and mix with other students of their age group from our South Auckland Catholic Schools.

Next week our school will celebrate Social Justice Week. Students will be participating in various lessons about being just, kind, and fair to all with a theme of “Say No To Racism – We Are One In Christ. Whakakāhoretia Te Kaikiri. Kotahi Anō Tātou I Roto I Te Karaiti.” This is a great reminder for us all to live like Jesus who showed us that everyone is welcome.

We are so pleased to receive seven nominations for our five elected Board positions. It is great to see that these parents are willing to commit to this position for the next three years. Having seven candidates means there will be an election and our parent community will make the final choice. I wish each of them the very best. You can read more about the voting process further in the newsletter.

Looking forward to a fine weekend.

Stay well and God bless.

Ako 2 Service Day

As a part of our Religious Education learning this term, students in Ako Rua were asked to think about how they could use their gifts to serve our church community. Last week students had the opportunity to complete their service in various areas of our community, from helping Mr Jones to improve our school environment to washing teachers’ cars, tidying our Library, baking for our parish members, tidying the cemetery, and supporting our younger students with their learning. What a beautiful way to see students use their gifts for the mission of the church and school community. Super proud of you all on a wonderful morning of giving to others. Ka Pai! Well done everyone!

Ako 1 News

Ako 1 have been very busy participating in school cross country, continuing with our concept – Whakahihi, and of course, all our usual learning! Check out our photos and some of our talented writers with their recounts on Cross Country!

Ako 2 News

Last week we had some awesome outside providers come in to educate Ako 2 on Marine conservation and Portrait Art.

On Thursday BLAKE-VR came in and provided an experience in Virtual Reality of our Marine life and how we can preserve it. We are now furthering the passion we have for our marine life with lessons about marine reserves, fishing, and mussels and mangroves. This will result in our students creating a scientific experiment/product that can help our environment.

Learning in Arahi

Over the past two weeks, students in Arahi have continued to work hard and have participated well in their learning activities. We have recently completed a maths assessment and have been incredibly pleased with the results. Please keep encouraging your child to complete their weekly MathsWhizz homework as this is making a difference in consolidating what they are learning about in class. We have also been busy taking part in BLAKE – VR, where we learnt about the marine biology of the Hauraki Gulf and the importance of taking care of this special place. Other highlights have been our Tuakana/Teina activities, music lessons, and leading the school in Fitness every Tuesday and Thursday.

Our 2022 School Board Candidates

Luke Kneebone

Hi, I’m Luke Kneebone and I am seeking election to the St Joseph’s Pukekohe Board of Trustees.

I currently have two boys attending St Joseph’s, in Year 5 and Year 2, and my youngest will be starting school late next year.

I attended Catholic Primary and Secondary schools and believe this gave me a good foundation in education, but also instilling good values which have carried me in good stead through my adult life. I want to ensure that the children attending St Joseph’s Pukekohe have the same opportunities I had, to set them up for a successful future.

I currently work in the Pukekohe community and have done so for the last 13 years. From working in the community I have an awareness of community issues and feel I could add value to supporting the tamariki and whanau of the St Joseph’s Pukekohe school community.

It would be a pleasure and an honour to represent the school community as a member on the St Joseph’s Pukekohe Board of Trustees.

Denis Murphy

My name is Denis Murphy. My wife Joan is a teacher aide at St Joseph’s and our 5 children were all educated at the school. I am a qualified accountant and was a Board member at St Joseph’s from 1992 to 2009, 7 years as Treasurer, 8 as Chairman, and 2 as Deputy Chairman.

One of our grandchildren has just started at the school so I am keen to be involved again.

I am currently a Business Manager at Pukekohe High School and prior to that, I was Business Manager at James Cook High School. My responsibilities at Pukekohe High School include Financial Management, Property Management, Health and Safety, Human Resources, and Strategic Planning.

I believe my experience in both school governance and management could be useful to St Joseph’s and I would love to be able to contribute to the aims and life of the school which has been a big part of the local community for nearly 100 years.

It has certainly made an impact on my family!

Jasmine Richardson

Kia ora,

I am a wife to Mike and mum to Gabriel, Zena, and Mia-Rose Richardson. I have worked at ASB bank for the last 17 years, across different divisions and roles. In my current role, I work with design and facilitation managers as well as programme managers to implement workshops and development programmes to see staff be successful and grow in their current roles and progress into areas of their passion.

I have previously served on the Toddlers Turf Childcare board for a number of years covering all roles as required, and also previously as secretary for Te Pati Maori, Tamaki Makaurau. I am currently serving as Secretary for Tuia, ASB Maori Advisory Council. I have an inquisitive nature and desire to see organizational vision and purpose realised through a partnership between board and management.

This year I started a journey to learn te reo and incorporate this into my everyday language.

As a whanau we believe in supporting our school wherever we can, be it the camp fundraisers, road patrol, cross country, or on the board.

We all do what we can when we can and this is me putting my hand up to help if needed in this area.

Two of my favorite quotes and a Bible verse that motivate me.

“Take care of our children. Take care of what they hear, take care of what they see, and take care of what they feel. For how the children grow, so will be the shape of Aotearoa.” – Dame Whina Cooper.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr.Seuss

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. – Jeremiah 29:11

Noho ora mai,

Jasmine Richardson

Michael Noble

My name is Mike Noble. I have three children, Jack 13 years, Louis 11 years, both attending Sacred Heart College, and Meg 9 years who currently attends St Joseph’s.

Of late I have been involved with rugby at St Joseph’s. I have enjoyed coaching the children and seeing their progression and enthusiasm.

I enjoy being an active member of the St Joseph’s community. I believe that this amazing community of students, teachers, and parents will foster great character and resilience in our children in the future.

Predominantly my working background is plumbing which I have done since leaving Sacred Heart as a 16-year-old boy. For the last 16-plus years, I have run a plumbing business in partnership with my father.

Since 2019 I have been a member of the School Board with particular involvement in school property projects. I liaise closely with the school caretaker and Principal in regards to the current property development and hope to continue to serve on the board in this capacity for the benefit of our school community.

God bless.

Carla Van Tiel

Hi, my name is Carla Van Tiel and I would love to be your parent representative on the St Joseph’s School Board of Trustees. Tim and I have three children, our eldest son Will is at Sacred Heart College and our youngest two, George and Charlie, are in Year 5 and Year 3 here at St Joseph’s.

I went to St Mary’s Primary School in Papakura, and Baradene College of the Sacred Heart. I completed my Bachelor studies at Auckland University and post-graduate studies in business communications at AUT. I have owned various businesses throughout NZ since my mid 20’s mostly focused in the hospitality, fashion, and homewares sector.

I have been actively involved at St Joseph’s in my role as the Chairperson of the PTA, harried road patroller, parent help and as a “too loud” supporter at various school sporting events. I look forward to offering a fresh, female entrepreneurial perspective to matters of governance and finance for the school and appreciate your support.

Simon Ross Dykes

My name is Simon Dykes. I have one child (Pipa, year 8) currently attending St Joseph’s, and my two elder children Olivia and Solomon are former pupils of the school. I am keenly involved with the school through assisting with fundraising events and as parent support on school camps and class trips where possible. I have been a proud board member of St Joseph’s for the previous 4 years and am currently the Board Chairman.

Outside of school, I am employed in the logistics industry for one of New Zealand’s largest freight forwarding companies, where I work as a trade manager. I have been involved in this industry for twenty-three years. Similar to education logistics is a dynamic industry that is fast-paced and constantly changing. I enjoy a role that allows me to work with suppliers, customers, and staff to achieve beneficial and sustainable products for the company and our customers.

When I am not a taxi driver for my children I enjoy cycling, football, and triathlons as well as other outdoor activities.

I enjoy the environment St Joseph’s creates for its pupils and am passionate about continuing this. As we approach the school’s centenary I believe that my enthusiasm for the school’s continued success and my work and life experiences make me a candidate who can offer strong support and leadership and make me a valuable member of the St Joseph’s Board of Trustees. I would be privileged to receive your vote of support.

Elvira Balle

I have been privileged to be a part of St Joseph’s Primary School community for the past 11 years, initially as a parent and in May 2018 I was appointed as the Board Minute Secretary. This has developed my knowledge of school governance activities and ignited a passion for school governance and management. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serving the school community.

My family’s association with St Joseph’s Primary School is extensive. I currently have one child at the school, Rene Year 3. My older two sons, Kieron Year 9 and Ethan Year 7 both attend Sacred Heart College, and my daughter, Leiya is currently in Year 11 at St Mary’s College and all attended St Joseph’s Primary School. I am NZ-Filipina, born in New Zealand, and my children are of Tainui descent (Paternal side). We as a family represent some of the diversity within our school community. There is also a long-standing history between various extended family members over the school’s existence, and our extended family have been committed to the area and our local parish St Patrick’s for generations. Given our local school, parish and community have given my family so much, I have no hesitation in giving back.

I have been very lucky to serve on the Board of Trustees at St Joseph’s Primary School, which is blessed with a tremendously supportive community, talented and passionate teachers, as well as strong values and history. I’m passionate about helping establish a Catholic College which will ensure these important values thrive. I am also currently on the St Ignatius of Loyola College Establishment Board, and currently the Establishment Board Secretary. The challenge for a new school is ensuring we remain true to our Catholic values while building a world-class education facility. School governance continues to be challenged by a fast-changing and uncertain world, which requires constant recalibration to remain relevant. Ultimately our end goal is to ensure our children become independent, life-long learners.

I have owned my own business for the past 15 years within Auckland and the Waikato regions. I believe I can offer experience and expertise as a member of the Board. I possess a broad range of skills such as accounting practices, communication and leadership, human resources, health & safety, marketing and customer services, time management, problem-solving, and networking.

Thank you for your consideration.
