Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava     Kamusta    Malo e lelei    Mauri     Malo ni     Faka talofa atu    Namaste   Greetings to all

Term 4 is well underway and by now you would have received your child’s team’s term newsletter and the Term 4 Key Dates, so it will be of no surprise to you that we have a very busy term ahead. Our tamariki look smart in their summer uniforms.

A special welcome back to Mrs Sam Tino and Mrs Kerri Egelmeer. Both ladies are returning to us, after maternity leave, in a part-time capacity and co-teaching in Ako Year 2/Room 8 until the end of the year. Mr Richard Plenos has moved with his family to Wellington.

Our first week began with a MOE-designated Teacher Only Day on Friday. This was the second day of professional development provided by the ministry. There are a further two days allocated in 2026; much needed as we navigate the recently updated new maths curriculum.

A special thank you to those families who attended our school-assisted mass last Sunday. It was so lovely to see you there and the church was packed to capacity. Special thanks to Mrs Flerinda Valondo and Mrs Jenni Logan who share our DRS position at school and prepared the children so well. Weren’t we lucky to have both Fr Robert and Fr Eke to concelebrate?

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. At school, our children will be saying the rosary each day and taking turns to pray the rosary in our prayer area with the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, who also holds her rosary beads. I encourage you to say the rosary in your homes so our children can experience this traditional prayer with you as a family.

Thank you for accommodating your children yesterday during the teacher strike action. I am sure you will understand this action wasn’t taken lightly. It is sad to see so many of our public sector so discontent with their working conditions at the moment. The run-on effect is this is affecting our whole community. I hope this can be resolved quickly.

I imagine you and your whānau are looking forward to this Labour Weekend together and I am sure our Year 5 & 6 children are looking forward to their camp in Week 6 too, but not before we hold our annual Mission Day on Friday 7th November. Mission Day is a long-standing tradition in our school, organised by our senior students. St Joseph’s School continues to support the work of the Mission Sisters in India and Vietnam.

Wishing you and your whanau many spring blessings.

Nga manaakitanga ki a koe.

Special Catholic Character

School Assisted Mass

A big thank you to all our tamariki and whaanau for supporting our School Assisted Mass on Sunday 19th October. It was a wonderful occasion sharing our Catholic Faith with the Parish Community. Our students looked smart in their school uniform and represented us with pride. Thank you for your continued support of the Parish food bank. They truly appreciate it.

Mission Day

Our annual Mission Day is on Friday 7th November. There will be a liturgy held by our youngest students alongside our annual market hosted by our eldest students. All funds raised from this market go to support the RNDM sisters in their missionary work.  St Joseph’s School continues to support the work of the Mission Sisters in India and Vietnam.

Catholic Character Review

There will be Catholic Character Review in Week 6- November 12-13. Visitors from Catholic Education Services- Auckland will be coming to review our Religious Education classes and the Catholic Character of our school. We are looking forward to showcasing how wonderful our school is.

Understanding Your Child’s Learning

It is important that children are reading daily at home. This does not necessarily mean they need to be reading a school reading book. There are words and print all around us – reading at home could include recipes, signs, comics, magazines etc. It is also being read to by an adult.

Reading can also be hard, if you notice your child struggling try these strategies.

You can also check out the Ministry of Education’s Parent Portal for useful tips on how you can support your child’s education.

Health and Safety Update

All students are asked to wait to be picked up after school either by the gate on Dublin Street or by the front gate on Seddon Street. Students are not to play on the playgrounds after school unless a parent or caregiver is actively supervising them. There are no teachers on duty (apart from road patrol) after school.

Cybersafety

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month — a great time to review how we keep our children safe online.

As a parent or caregiver at St Joseph’s, you have free access to Qustodio, a parental control tool that helps you monitor and guide your child’s online activity, and an online safety hub with digital safety advice.

Click here to access the St Joseph’s School Online Safety Hub

About halfway down the front page, you will find the section for Qustodio. If you would like to create a free account, you need to use the link from the St Joseph’s School Online Safety Hub.

Qustodio allows you to:

  • Filter content and apps
  • Monitor activity
  • Set time limits
  • Locate family
  • Track calls and SMS
  • Receive reports, alerts & SOS

You will only have access to Qustodio while you have a child attending St Joseph’s School, and for as long as we are able to include this as part of our Linewize subscription.

If you have any questions or issues regarding your Qustodio account, please contact their support team – myschool@qustodio.com

Celebrations

Aroha

This week Aroha have had a visit from Sue from St John’s in School – Hato Hone, and we have been learning about what to do in a big emergency. We firstly learnt the difference between a big and little emergency. We then learnt about what to do – 1, 2, 3. 1 – Safe (check that you are safe); 2 – Shout and Shake (shout out to the person and shake them to see if they are awake); 3 – Side (put them on their side) and call 111. We learnt about what to do when we are on the phone and what to say. We loved practising what we have to do in a big emergency.

Ako

Ako team has been absolutely loving our cricket lessons! The students are learning so much, from the basics of a great catch to the technique behind a good bowl and, of course, how to bat like a pro. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm and teamwork out on the field. Who knows, we might have some future Blackcaps or White Ferns in our team!

We’ve been enjoying a lovely, peaceful start to our mornings recently by praying the Rosary together.

This dedicated time allows us to learn traditional prayers and deepen our personal time with God, which is a beautiful way to begin the day.  Our Year 3 students had a wonderful visit from Father Eka of Saint Ignatius of Loyola College. The students worked hard to prepare insightful questions about the Sacraments, and Father Eka shared his wisdom and knowledge with us. They learnt a great deal about the deep meanings and beautiful rituals of each Sacrament. It was a memorable learning experience for everyone.

Arahi

Mitre10 Sausage Sizzle – Over the holidays we had a very successful fundraiser, selling sausages at Mitre10. A huge thank you to Hellers for providing us with 520 sausages. This is part of their ‘Sausage in Schools’ programme-which helps schools around the country fundraise for special events. In our case, this was supporting our Year 5&6 upcoming camp. We also wish to thank Bakers Delight for donating all of the bread and Mitre10 for providing the space and the BBQ. We are so grateful to live in such a generous community. Many thanks to the families who helped on the BBQ too!

PTA Thanks!

We are so grateful to our St Joseph’s Community for being so generous in their sponsorship of last term’s Oxford Pie fundraiser.

We raised just over $800 to help support initiatives around the school.

Parent Webinar: What teens really say about being online

Join Netsafe’s Karla Sanders as she shares insights from her recent roadshow with almost 200 rangatahi around the motu, facilitating youth workshops to better understand what young people are doing online.

Too often, there is an assumption that all teens are using the same platforms in the same ways, or that their experiences are predictable based on gender or age. The roadshow was designed to test this and to surface a more complex and accurate picture of how young people spend their time online.

When: Tuesday 18th November at 7pm
