Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava     Kamusta    Malo e lelei    Mauri     Malo ni     Faka talofa atu    Namaste   Greetings to all

This week we have been celebrating our fanau’s Pacific Islands.  We have focused on different island countries each day, displaying their flag and beginning our day with their national anthem and prayer in their language.  There have been Pasifika artefacts and books on display in the library, shared food from Samoa, Kiribati and Tonga, and arts and crafts in the classrooms. Today we celebrated Tonga. We are so grateful to have our Pasifika fanau who share their culture with us. We wish to use this opportunity to thank all of the fanau who have set-up displays, contributed to sharing food and their support with the Pasifika speech competition. Also, thank you to Miss Massey for all her organisation is getting this week underway.

Every week is a busy week here at school. Last week was Maths Week and we were thrilled to see the maths themed costumes that the children paraded in on Thursday. Some of them were very clever! There was also a lunchtime House Mathex Competition for children across the year groups. That was fun! In Week 8 we have our Franklin Schools’ Mathex and we have some Year 5&6 teams, being prepared by Mrs Burns, entering.

Last Friday, the school attended the parish mass for The Assumption; a very special feast day in our church calendar. This year Mrs Jenni Logan and Mrs Flerinda Valondo share our Director of Religious Studies (DRS) role.I want to thank them for the careful preparation and practices of our school liturgies. I also want to acknowledge Mrs Silvy Lane and Mrs Davina West who willingly share their music ministry with our school.

I was privileged to be the accompanying principal at a recent External Catholic Character Review at Holy Cross School, Papatoetoe. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time in another Catholic primary school. Principals may go to other schools for a meeting but it is not often that we get to see more of the school. I enjoyed my experience and hopefully it will help me be better prepared for our own review in November.

Yesterday, St Joseph’s School and Pukekohe Intermediate co-hosted the Franklin Pasifika Speech Competition. We were able to get our judges from the MOE and Pukekohe High School. Events like this welcome Pasifika fanau into our schools, and their children proudly participate. Our St Joseph’s children represented us and their fanau beautifully. This was followed by a feast to which all competing schools contributed, but our Tongan fanau were very generous hosts. We thank them for their ongoing support.

Today, I am attending the Franklin Principals PLD day. One of the speakers, Jake Bailey, became a household name after giving his head boy speech at Christchurch Boys High a week after being diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of cancer. Ten years later he is an inspirational speaker promoting resilience. Another speaker is Dave McKay, an elite sport and mental performance mentor for adolescents and young people, followed by Janelle Riki-Waaka who will talk about embedding tiriti-honouring practices to foster partnership, equity, cultural responsiveness, and amplify success in kura. I’m sure the day will be very worthwhile.

Tomorrow is our Multicultural Mufti Day and all children can wear their cultural dress to school. We are excited to see the variety there will be. St Joseph’s is a very diverse school with nineteen different cultures represented. You are all welcome and belong in our Catholic school family.

Congratulations to the nine people who have put their names forward to stand on our School Board for the next three-year term. It is great to see that we have parents interested and wanting to be involved. You now need to vote for your choice of five candidates. Voting is now open, and our final election day is 10th September.

Thank you for supporting our staff today by picking up your children from school at lunchtime. We decided to keep the school running as usual during the morning with minimal disruption to our teaching and learning programme. This afternoon, most of our teachers and support staff will have attended a paid union meeting (PUM) along with other schools in the Franklin area. We appreciate that this may have not been convenient for you, however, union negotiations are currently in progress. Children staying at school, will have assembled in the hall for singing and other activities.

I’m looking forward to the netball finals on Saturday. Go St Joseph’s!

Nga manaakitanga ki a koe.

St Joseph’s Community Health Survey Results

In accordance with Section 91 of the Education and Training Act 2020, St Joseph’s School  has completed its biannual consultation with the school community regarding the delivery of the Health Curriculum. This ensures that the views of parents, caregivers, and whānau are considered when designing and implementing programmes that support the holistic wellbeing of all tamariki—physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

There were a total of 54 respondents to this survey, 21% of school families. The survey was open from 21 July to 8 August 2025. All responses were anonymous.

The results of the 2025 Community Health Survey show that parents want the health programme deeply rooted in Catholic values, strongly focused on safety and wellbeing, and transparent about sensitive topics (like sexuality education).

The full report will be presented to the Board at the September board meeting.

Key Findings

  • Awareness: Most parents know the Health Curriculum is compulsory, but only half know that consultation is legally required every two years.
  • Priorities: Parents rated Water Safety, Physical Safety, Resilience, Digital Safety, and Self-Esteem as the most important topics.
  • Sensitivity: Human Sexuality Education was rated lowest in importance and mentioned as a concern in comments. (7.04/10 rating of importance – 10 being the highest)
  • Catholic Values: The majority (70%) want Catholic values strongly embedded, especially Care for self and others, Dignity, and Respect for Life.
  • Confidence: 75% of parents are confident or very confident in the current programme, though a small group are only moderately confident.

Parent Comments

  • Wellbeing is very important (5 mentions)
    • Parents valued the emphasis on health and wellness.

  • Bullying and harassment (4 mentions)
    • Parents want strong policies and proactive strategies against bullying.

Recommendations

  • Strengthen communication about the consultation requirement.
  • Keep wellbeing and safety at the core of the programme.
  • Be transparent about Human Sexuality Education and ensure it reflects Catholic values.
  • Continue embedding Catholic values explicitly.
  • Reinforce anti-bullying measures and mental health support, such as self-esteem and resilience
  • Encourage the community to review the Bullying and Harassment policy as part of the Term 4 2025 policy review schedule, ensuring the policy has strong and proactive strategies against bullying and harassment that are reflective of our school community.

At St Joseph’s, we know that regular school attendance is essential for every child’s learning and success.

Our goal is for 80% of our students to attend school at least 90% of the time.

Understanding Your Child’s Learning

Remember to check out the Ministry of Education’s Parent Portal for useful tips on how you can support your child’s education.

How do you feel about the word ALGEBRA?

Want to support maths at home https://bit.ly/44jjyFC

With your child, you could: create patterns with everyday objects. Use blocks, beads, shells or toys to make and extend patterns (red-blue-red-blue or big-small-big-small). Ask your child to predict “what comes next?” Make increasingly more complex patterns using beads, play “what’s missing?” games. Line up a few toys or objects, then remove 1 while your child closes their eyes. Ask them to identify what’s missing, helping them understand the concept of unknown values.

Road Safety Update

Message from Senior Constable Lisa Ross:

On 20 August, I was stationed outside the front gate in the morning and noticed several unsafe parking behaviours.

A number of vehicles attempted to park directly in front of the school on the yellow lines and had to be moved on. Vehicles were also stopping in front of the school driveway, which blocked teachers from accessing the car park.

A reminder: Please do not park on the yellow lines outside the school. (Infringement notices will be issued if vehicles are observed doing this)

Please do not stop or park across the school driveway. (Infringement notices will be issued if vehicles are observed doing this)

When pulling over in front of the school, please avoid doing U-turns. These impact the flow of traffic and, particularly at busy pick-up times, create significant backlogs.

Let’s all make an effort to work together to ensure the safety of our students and keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Kind Regards,

Lisa ROSS

School Community Officer / Senior Constable LRZ548

Celebrations

2025 Maths Week

Last week the school celebrated Maths Week. There was a maths challenge question in the day sheet each day that the students could complete. If they were correct and handed in their sheet, they earnt house points. This was an exciting way to begin the day and challenge our minds with various maths questions and activities. The students at St Joe’s are doing very well in Maths and we are seeing excellent improvements across all areas of the school. On Thursday, the tamariki paraded around the court in some amazing costumes. There were dice, calculators, fractions, number hats, tessellated patterns, and heaps of numbers. We also had a Mathex competition between our school houses. This was very competitive and loud. It was great to see our years 2 and 3 students participating and eager to share their maths skills. Congratulations to the following:

Aroha

We have had a fun filled two weeks. Aroha really enjoyed Maths week. Our costumes were so creative! Pasifika week has been very engaging and we have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about our beautiful island neighbours.

Ako

Ako has been enjoying Pasifika week this week and sharing and learning about the cultures within our classroom. The students have been wearing their cultural dress with pride and loving sharing and teaching us their language and traditions. We also enjoyed hearing and learning all about the Kiribati culture and now many of us would love to visit.

Arahi

Arahi Year 5 has had a busy and exciting few weeks. We had a great time celebrating Maths Week, participating in fun challenges and dressing up in maths-themed costumes.

We were honoured to lead the school’s Assumption of Mary Mass. Our students also enjoyed a special visit from high school students from Tokyo, who taught us how to make origami. We loved spending time with our new friends!

This week, we’ve been practising our basketball skills with Franklin Basketball and celebrating Pasifika Week by learning about other cultures and their traditions.

Pasifika Week

What a fantastic Pasifika Week we’ve had so far! We’ve spent the week celebrating the cultures of the Pacific.

Our students loved exploring the beautiful displays in the library, hearing fascinating talks, and, of course, tasting some delicious Pasifika food generously prepared by our wonderful families.

A huge congratulations to all the students who took part in the Franklin Schools’ Pasifika Speech Competition. Your performances were a testament to the pride you have in your culture, and you represented your families and our school admirably. Thank you to all the families who played such a big part in making this event a success.

A massive thank you to our Pasifika families. This week wouldn’t have been the same without you. Your generosity in sharing your time and culture has given our students an enriching experience.

We can’t wait to wrap up our amazing Pasifika Week with a vibrant multicultural celebration this Friday! All students are invited to dress to represent their cultures.

Some of our students have been working hard to prepare performances for an assembly starting at 11:30. We’re especially excited for the Kiribati Group and our Year 4-6 Pasifika Group to share what they’ve been working hard on.

A huge thank you to the Kiribati families for preparing their performances, and to Joseph and Atu Emelio, as well as Mrs Ali, for their support in choreographing the routines and getting our students ready to perform.

Congratulations!

Alex Gynos represented St. Joseph’s Catholic School in her very first Winter Aims Archery Games. She competed against older students, some up to 16 years old, and proudly finished 26th.

Alex has only recently started doing Archery and recently competed in her first-ever big event. There were 40 schools that participated with 93 on the morning course that she was in. Thirty-three of those were in her field most of whom were 13 -16 year olds with a lot more background in this. She was incredibly nervous but so happy to represent her school.
