Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava     Kamusta    Malo e lelei    Mauri     Malo ni     Faka talofa atu    Namaste   Greetings to all

What a lovely occasion we enjoyed last night at our whanau picnic and Christmas carols; a lovely celebration to begin our Advent season.  I was delighted to see so many whaanau enjoying the evening. Our youngest Aroha students were dressed as shepherds, kings and angels, and a nativity scene was reenacted on the hall deck. Thank you for coming.

This Sunday will be the beginning of the first week of Advent and the start of the new Liturgical Year in our Catholic Church. Advent is a time of preparation and a time to renew our commitment to our faith as we await the birth of baby Jesus; which we recall each Christmas. This Christian celebration is honoured by many and it is important that the Christmas message is not just about presents and food, but about generosity and peace.

We were very pleased with the response to our recent community survey. It was a good representation of our school families and, once a summary has been made, will influence our strategic plan for the next 2-3 years. It was lovely to read the positive comments that support what we do as a school as well as hear your suggestions as we move forward as a Year 0-6 school. The House that gained the most points for completing the survey was Chanel.

The next three weeks are packed full of exciting events for our students; particularly our Year 6-8 school leavers. We have given these children opportunities to celebrate their years with us as well as prepare them for their transition to their next school. While many will move on together and become the foundation pupils of St Ignatius College, some will continue to go to other schools in Pukekohe and beyond. We hope they will look back on their time at St Joseph’s fondly and continue to live the values they have learnt here. As we have two weeks left at school, I would like to remind everyone that the correct uniform and positive behaviours are still expected.

Next week we have three school retreats for our three leaving year groups at the Tyburn Monastery. We want all of our students to experience this calm, prayerful and reflective day before they leave us. For some of our students, it might be their only retreat experience and we hope (and pray) that they continue to commit themselves to following the teachings of Jesus Christ and our values to love, to learn and to lead, in their futures.

Wishing you and your whaanau a wonderful weekend.

Blessings to you and your whaanau always.

Advent Liturgy

Ako Rua led an Advent Liturgy yesterday afternoon. Advent will begin this coming Sunday, 3 December. They began by explaining the meaning of the season of Advent as well as significance and purpose of the Advent wreath. Advent is a time of waiting and preparation to welcome Jesus into our hearts at Christmas. Some special parts of the Liturgy were a liturgical dance called Maranatha and the rap and Litany of Saints using their saint mosaic artwork.  Advent is a penitential season, so we should make small sacrifices as part of this preparation, such as chores at home and helping others.

Carol Evening

There was  a wonderful turnout of whanau yesterday evening for our picnic and carol singing. We were blessed with the weather and so could sing outside. The atmosphere was truly joyful and festive. Thank you everyone.

Celebrations

Aroha

Last week Aroha enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Auckland Zoo. We loved trying to search for all of the animals. Some came to play and were cheeky, some were sneaky and some hid away! Thank you to all of our wonderful parent helpers who came to support us. It was a fantastic trip!

Ako 1

Ako 1 are excitedly preparing for our school Christmas Carol Evening. We have also been preparing for our mini Athletics day on Friday the 1st December.

Ako 2

Ako 2 have been busy beavers working on their Communion of Saints projects, concept, performing their Advent liturgy yesterday, and singing carols. It has been an amazing year, and when we look back on all that we have achieved, I am truly blown away. We are so proud of all the wonderful opportunities our children have been given and taken on this year.

Arahi

In Arahi we have been noticing symbols around us in Aotearoa that help remind us of the meaning of Advent. We have also been reflecting on the types of attitudes we need as we prepare for Christmas. We’ve created Advent calendars to open our hearts to draw us closer to God during this season of Advent.

Thank you to all the ākonga and whānau who have returned their Year 7 and Year 8 Tyburn Monastery retreat permission slips and letters. Whānau letters are due tomorrow (Friday 1 December).

We are looking forward to celebrating our Year 7 leavers and Year 8 graduates over the next couple of weeks. Invites have been sent out with students! As these are catered events, please RSVP by Monday 4 December

We’d like to acknowledge the incredible Arahi whānau for your ongoing encouragement and support. It’s been a brilliant year of learning and adventure! It’s been a team effort – THANK YOU!

We wish the following Arahi students good luck as they go on to represent St Joseph’s School at Auckland Champs for athletics – Arjun Bal (400m) and Isileli Mamatuki (shot put).

Congratulations to Sofia Elive and her Cheerleading team “Cheer Dynamix”  who have walked away with first place and the highest scoring team in their division – They were the only team in the competition representing New Zealand at the National Championships in Melbourne, and they had the highest score out of all 599 cheer teams.
