As all of our teaching staff are expected to be at staff professional development meetings by 3:00pm on Tuesday afternoon, parents with queries, concerns etc are asked to please see teachers at an alternative time, unless, of course, the matter is urgent. Thank you. Due to security concerns, the teacher on duty at Dublin Street after school will now lock the Dublin Street gate at 3:00pm. Any children not collected by 3:00pm will need to wait outside the school office and be collected from the main entrance in Seddon Street. If you wish to place an order please contact the school office. The cost is $6:00 per book. Parents are reminded to please take care when dropping children off to school and collecting them in the afternoon. Both Dublin St and Seddon St become very congested and extreme care is needed to ensure the safety of all. Road Patrols If there are any parents who would be able to help supervise our road patrol in the morning please contact the school office. The required times are 8:15am – 8:45am on Seddon Street. Thank you.
Would parents please refrain from parking on the yellow lines either side of the pedestrian crossing as it compromises the safety of children using the crossing. Parents are also asked to refrain from parking across school entrance ways. Collecting children after school To help ensure pupil safety, any children not collected from the Dublin St entrance by 3:00pm will be asked to wait in front of the administration building. Road Safety Tips When children are riding skateboards, scooters or on line skates it is important that they wear the appropriate safety gear e.g. a helmet. Everyone loves to play, but not all places are safe playing areas. A sensible, safe, playing person would not be playing near the road or in a car park. Adults must always set a good example e.g. always wearing seatbelts, crossing at pedestrian crossings - children learn by copying what we do. Children should always get in and out of a vehicle on the footpath side. Children should wait to be picked up either inside the school grounds or a designated spot. Car parks are not appropriate places to wait or be picked up or dropped off. Waving or beckoning your child from across the street is not a safe thing to do. Meet them on the other side and cross together. Speed contributes to more than 1 in 5 road deaths in NZ every year. Speed cameras were introduced into NZ in 1993. Within the first 12 months of operation, speed related crashes fell by 5.5 percent. Healthy Eating/School Lunch Policy In 2005, after consultation with our school community, our Board of Trustees introduced a Healthy Eating / School Lunch policy. This policy supports our school health programme and encourages awareness of environmental issues associated with the disposal of rubbish. Thank you to the many parents who help us to implement this policy and to all our children who remember the following rules: a) Food scraps go in the worm buckets. b) Plastic and other food wrappings (with the exception of paper towels and lunch paper wrap) are to be put back in lunch boxes or sealable plastic bags and taken home. c) Drinking water is encouraged d) Drink packaging is to be taken home e) We are all responsible for our own rubbish. Playground Rubbish A reminder to parents that in line with our school lunch policy we have no rubbish bins around the school and now have worm food buckets for food scraps. Lunch wrappings etc that cannot be fed to the worms need to be put back in the child’s lunch box/sealed bag and taken home. Congratulations must go to our students who are making a fine effort with these arrangements. Well done! NB: Lunch paper can be fed to our worms. As per our school Cyber Safety policy all Year 3 – 8 students must abide by St Joseph’s School’s Cyber Safety Use Agreement. Parents / caregivers are asked to go over the Cyber Safety Use Agreement with their child / children and then complete the relevant section on the form sent home from school. Students who do not have a signed form are not permitted to access the relevant school technologies. Click here for a copy of this form (you must have Adobe Reader) Internet Safety – Bebo Sites We are aware that many of our senior students have sites on the Bebo website. We encourage parents to read and discuss with their child/children the safety information on the leaflet which can be downloaded below. As explained in the information it is important that children are using sites such as Bebo appropriately, and that they are aware that unless made private photos or words posted on their Bebo site are available on the worldwide web for everyone to see. Click here to download the leaflet. (You will need Adobe Reader.)
